Description of Cricut Lesson & Activity

Get your student's imagination going as they design and create their own fidget spinners! Learn about balance, motion, and Newton's laws while crafting a toy that's as mesmerizing as it is fun.

ISTE Standards

  • 1.1a Learning Goals

  • 1.1b Customized Learning Environments

  • 1.1c Feedback to Improve Practice

  • 1.1d Technology Fundamentals

State / Local / Other Standards

  • Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) 5-PS2-1: Support an argument that the gravitational interaction is attractive and depends on the masses of interacting objects.

  • Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for Mathematics 5.MD.B.2: Make a line plot to display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit (e.g., using the data collected on spin times)

Learning Objective(s)

  • Students will be able to explain the scientific principles behind fidget spinners, including concepts of motion, friction, and energy.

Materials Required

  • Cardstock  in 3 different colors

Other tools and materials:

  • 3 washers per spinner (72 )
  • Glue
  • Hot glue
  • Beads
  • Toothpicks
  • Scissors

Instructions

  • Stack and glue 4 matching spinner shapes on top of each other to create a thick sturdy spinner.

  • Add a toothpick through the center hole of the spinner and make sure it spins freely (gently make the hole bigger if needed).

  • Add the paper washer on top of the spinner.

  • Add a bead onto the toothpick on top of the washer

  • Trim the toothpick and add glue on top of the bead to keep the toothpick in place.

  • Repeat steps 3, 4 and 5 on the other side.

  • See how the spinner works without the washers, then glue them on and compare the difference.

Assessment

  • Students will create a presentation or a poster that illustrates and explains the science behind fidget spinners. They will include diagrams, key vocabulary, and examples of how each concept (motion, friction, energy) applies to a fidget spinner's function.
