Description of Cricut Lesson & Activity

Lesson #1 in a two part series on community helpers featuring Cricut Design Space Templates! Students will learn all about community helpers and the role they play in our community.

Learning Objective(s)

  • Students will build background knowledge on community helpers by reading related texts and brainstorming ideas.
  • Students will match up community helpers with their jobs to apply their
    understanding.

Materials Required

  • Related text - suggestions include:
    • Hello Hometown Heroes by Toni Armier
    • The Berenstain Bears: Jobs Around Town by Stan and Jan Berenstain
    • Whose Hat is This? by Sharon Katz Cooper, All Through the
      Night by Polly Faber
  • Picture Matching Activity
  • Medium weight cardstock (12x12)
  • StandardGrip mat
  • Fine-point blade
  • Glue stick.

Instructions

Introduction:

  • Gather students to the carpet or reading nook.
  • Show students the book cover and have them predict what the book will be about.
  • Then, read the book to students.

Lesson Activity:
  • After reading, discuss with the students what a community helper is and write the definition discussed on chart paper/whiteboard. Stemming off the definition, have students brainstorm words that describe a community helper. Ex- helpful, active, caring, etc. Ask students what community helpers were discussed in the book and brainstorm other community helpers. Record all student responses.
  • To reinforce what students have learned about community helpers, provide students with images of community helpers and a set of job descriptions written out on separate cards.
  • Have students match up the community helpers with their job descriptions, providing assistance as needed.

Closing:
  • Bring students back together in the carpet area.
  • Ask students to share about the community helpers we learned about.
  • Have them share their favorite community helper and why.

Assessment

  • Assess students based on their card sort activity.


Extension Activity:

  • Have students dress up as community helpers and have structured play areas throughout the room.
